Compassion in Maternal–Fetal Medicine: Integrating Empathy into Evidence-Based Practice

Abstract

High-risk pregnancies can be emotionally and clinically challenging for both families and healthcare professionals. While evidence-based care is essential, compassionate, patient-centred practice is equally critical in supporting women and their families through uncertainty, complex diagnoses, and difficult clinical decisions.

This lecture-based workshop explores the integration of empathy and professionalism into Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Participants will gain practical strategies from three expert-led presentations: “Healing with Humanity: The Role of Compassion in High-Risk Pregnancy Care,” “The Hidden Trauma of High-Risk Obstetrics: A Framework for Compassionate Counselling and Care in Complex Deliveries,” and “Perinatal Medicine and the Emotional Landscape: Supporting Families Through Uncertainty.”

A multidisciplinary panel discussion will encourage reflection and dialogue on real-world challenges, helping clinicians translate evidence into empathetic care. Attendees will leave equipped to strengthen communication, support families effectively, and enhance the quality and humanity of care in complex maternal–fetal scenarios
