Prof. Sayeba Akhter is a renowned Obstetrician and Gynecologist with more than 50 years of experience in clinical care, teaching, research, public health, and obstetric fistula management. She is internationally recognized for her pioneering contribution to obstetric fistula surgery and maternal health in Bangladesh. She took the initiative in establishing National Fistula Centre in Bangladesh and led its expansion to other institutions, while training doctors and health professionals from Bangladesh and several countries in fistula surgery. She is also the inventor of the low-cost Condom Uterine Tamponade, known as “Sayeba’s Method,” for managing severe postpartum hemorrhage, now incorporated into guidelines in several developing countries. Prof. Akhter has served as Professor and Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at leading medical institutions including Dhaka Medical College and BSMMU as well as were immediate past president of International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgery. She founded the MAMM’S Institute of Fistula and Women’s Health and has received numerous national and international awards, including Ekushey Padak, the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh .
