Professor Martha Hickey

Professor Martha Hickey is a Clinical Psychologist and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Melbourne. Her clinical and research area is menopause. She leads Australia’s largest menopause service, focusing on cancer patients.

She led the COMMA (Core Outcomes in Menopause) global initiative to standardize reporting in clinical trials of menopause treatments.

In 2024 she led the Lancet’s first Menopause series, was ‘topic expert’ for the NICE menopause guidelines, and led a Menopause Priority Setting Partnership across 51 countries.

With her WHAM (What Happens after Menopause?) cohort, she leads a Wellcome LEAP funded program on cognition and a Global Research Challenge on CVD after surgical menopause.

She is an Editor for the Cochrane Collaboration and the Lancet.

Professor Hickey works closely with artists to challenge negative messaging about ageing in women. This has included the Flesh after Fifty exhibition, featured in the Lancet Menopause series.
